Work Life Advice
Don’t take advice from just anyone with an opinion on your (work) life. Who should you listen to? When it comes to work, it’s all about choosing wisely. As I always say, don’t take travel tips from someone who’s never left home. Look for guidance from people who’ve been down the path you’re on.
Pick Your Advisors Carefully
People often give advice on things they’d never actually do themselves, and their limitations shouldn’t hold you back. Their advice often reflects their limits, not yours. And don’t take advice from anyone you wouldn’t invite to your dinner table or even consider trading lives with. It’s amazing how often we take advice from people we don’t even like. If you wouldn’t take their lifestyle—even if they threw it at you—maybe you don’t need their advice either. Also, remember, if someone throws garbage your way, you don’t have to dig through it.
Seek Out Those Who Want the Best for You
Go to people who genuinely want you to succeed. And be ready for advice you might not want to hear. Just because you feel offended doesn’t mean you’re in the right. So, choose your advisors carefully and be open to hearing different perspectives. Trust yourself, too. If you’re on the fence, sometimes the answer really is no.
In work life, it’s critical to sift through advice carefully. By choosing the right mentors or colleagues, you can get insights that’ll truly help you grow and thrive in your career. A good mentor or experienced colleague can offer practical, real-life advice that’s meaningful and useful.
Don’t Let Others’ Limits Define You
Remember that others’ advice is usually tinted by their own experiences and limits. They might mean well, but their advice might not fit your situation. Take guidance from those who’ve accomplished what you’re aiming for and who actually support your goals. Their advice is likely to be more useful and insightful.
